Skin Series: Facial Oils

In my years as an esthetician, I know it to be true that people are afraid of 2 words; peel and oil. We talked, briefly, on peels last week. Most people have an image of Samantha from Sex and the City in mind where she gets the facial peel and turns bright red. Homegirl had Santa jealous at how red she was. Facial oils are another topic that is kind of taboo in the skin care community. Lets explore facial oils, who they're for, and how to use them.

Facial oils can serve several different functions, depending on what you're trying to treat. Ultimately, facial oils are meant to increase hydration in the skin, repair damaged skin, and add a radiance like none other.

When searching for a facial oil, you first want to make sure its the right formulation of products for your skin. Next, you want to make sure its addressing the problem you want to correct. I would suggest using an oil overnight, when skin repairs itself. Finally, you want to make sure you're consistent in using it, not just the oil but all of your skin care. That's the only way your skin will recognize a routine and adapt to the ingredients.

Believe it or not, oils are for all skin types. I know you're thinking "Even for oily skin?" YES! Even for oily skin. When using a facial oil with oily skin, I recommend lightly emulsifying it with water and massaging it into your skin. That way your skin has a perfect balance of water and oil. For drier skin, massage it in as normal.
